26 Fashion Tips I’ve Learned Over the Past 26 Years!

This weekend I will be turning the big two six. I’m not quite sure how I feel about it yet. For one, 26 is one of those numbers where you have no idea what to celebrate. I now can rent a car. I can have a glass of wine. I can…well… do everything that I could pretty much do at 25. And whether that is a good thing or a bad thing I’ve yet to figure out.

Then there is the inevitable thinking back to what you thought you would be doing at 26 when you felt like 26 felt was a lifetime away. Somewhere between junior high and high school I had convinced myself I would be chatting it up with Diane Sawyer and Robin Roberts. Ya know, after my brilliant debut on GMA (Good Morning America) in which we would clearly become friends.

I’ve heard (from Oprah) that your 20’s are for figuring it out. And if that’s the case, I believe I’m at least succeeding or attempting to do just that. The one thing I’m sure of is that I’m wiser than the year before. In which case, why not impart my wisdom (of some sort) with some of the best fashion tips I’ve learned over the past 26 years. So here it goes:

1. Put your nails in a bowl of ice water to dry in 60 seconds

2. Wear nude under garments under anything white

3. A dab of light eyeshadow in the corner of your eyes makes them pop

4. Tie a skinny belt multiple times around your wrist for a new boho chic bracelet

5. Brush a stripe of bronzer down the middle of your nose to make your nose appear slimmer (Kim K does it)

6. Always bring stylish flats to walk around in NYC

7. Always have a pretty umbrella handy when visiting in NYC

8. Splurge on shoes

9. Never purchase an item from Old Navy without a discount (they come almost every week)

10. Turn your scarf into a vest for double usage

11. Only buy mid-rise jeans

12. Buy one clutch that can easily be moved from purse to purse so you can wear multiple purses in one season

13. Double your long chain necklaces to make bracelets

14. Wear your favorite cropped pants in the winter by wearing long boot socks & covering them up with tall boots

15. Turn your scarf into a shawl (wear it across your back, pull over your arms to the front then go back under your arms to be tied in the back) and wear over strapless dresses in the winter

16. Tie your trench coat in the back and wear it as an inside jacket

17. If you have a passion especially for fashion, start a blog

18. If you find t-shirts you love, buy them in multiple colors

19. Wear white after labor day

20. Even if you’re tall, wear heels

21. Overpacking isn’t worth it

22. If a collared button up no longer fits, cut off the bottom of the shirt and the sleeves and still wear it under sweaters

23. Use good shampoo & conditioner… it actually makes a difference

24. Find old door knobs to use as jewelry hangers

25. Don’t hang up your sweaters, fold them and they’ll last longer

26. To move up seats at Fashion Week stand in the aisle, ask the attendant, and wait 5 minutes minutes before the show starts… second row baby!

Fashion Bloggers Uncover The Best of Cyber Monday on Canopi.me

There comes a time in every girls life where she has to make a decision… to fight or not to fight… for shoes. And last night at 2 a.m. my decision had been made. I weaved in and out of a storming crowd of women. You know the ones, you’ve seen them in the SNL skits right next to Oprah’s audience, and I’m pretty sure they were all there.

After discovering a pile of shoe boxes stacked 4 feet high, I turned the corner and victoriously started running in slow motion with 3 boxes of boots secured in my hands while Queen’s “We Are The Champions” played over the loud speaker. Alright, lets be real. Christmas music was playing over the loud speaker.

Luckily for you, Canopi saves you from having to make a decision. Instead fashion bloggers uncover the best Cyber Monday deals while you shop from the comfort of your own home minus all the crazies. Seems like a much more logical scenario, right?

On Sunday or Monday while your browsing the web stop by Canopi.me and click on Mission: Cyber Monday to see the top Cyber Monday posts featuring deals uncovered from fashion bloggers all across the web!

You get a deal and you get deal… Everyone gets a DEAL! Just call me the Oprah of the web.

Cheap, Easy, & Under 25

Okay, it’s not as creepy as it sounds but at least got your attention and for those creepy fellers who have stumbled upon this blog… please leave now. As for everyone else I’m excited to show you the cheap & easy finds all under $25.

1. Old Navy Dress

This dress is already on my Christmas list. I’ve done my blogging duty by checking it out in person, and you can note that it is just as cute as I thought it would be. I’ve been rather impressed with Old Navy lately, and this look could be easily be worn through fall into early spring by layering with a pair of tights, boots, a scarf, and a jean jacket or even a blazer if necessary. Plus it’s only $19!

2. Old Navy Hat

I’ve had my eye on this hat for sometime now. The price keeps fluctuating up and down, but I’m pretty certain it’s not going to drop down past $12 until it gets closer to the end of winter. That being said, you can get 25% off  by 11/7 at OldNavy.com! So if you’ve been looking for a cute cloche hat, I’d highly suggest this red one. It’s seriously adorable. Trust me, I tried it on!

3. Kohl’s Scarf

It’s a weird thing to say, but birds are currently hot. While you can’t really go wrong with $5 scarf? You might as well be on trend when you find one.

4. Nasty Gal Necklace

Now that I’ve made my statement about the birds. They sadly don’t even compare to how hot the collard necklace trend is. While it’s not my recommendation to get on every fashion band wagon, I think this one is too cute to miss. Think about all those basic sweaters, long sleeve shirts, or tees you could easily dress up with this $12 necklace. Totally, worth it? I’d say so.

5. Target Suede Wedges

I was on a search for one of my friends who happens to be a fairly tall girl. She wanted a wedge with a little heel but nothing too high and something that would be comfy enough to wear to work. Needless to say, I found it at my local Target. Online it states that these shoes are $30, but in store I believe they range anywhere from $15 upward. Go in store to purchase this one.

6. Nasty Gal Necklace

I think you know how I feel about this.

To wrap up this post, I believe being cheap, easy, and under 25 has never looked so good. Do you have any more deals to add?

How to Find & Follow Bloggers? We Got the Answer!

Three years ago around this exact time I started a little fashion blog known as Reality Chic out of an attempt to figure out what I was passionate about. Fast forward a rough year later after not being able to find a job and two more years of one of the worst recessions our country has ever seen, and I decided to create my own by starting a company called Canopi.me.

I discovered that readers didn’t know where to search when it came to blog content. In other words there was no “library for bloggers”.  Not to mention there were all these bloggers like myself who had troubles figuring out how to get someone other than their mom and Facebook friends to read their site. So that’s when we came up with the concept that was formerly known as Righting Style and is now known as Canopi.me

While I was creating a job for myself, not to mention my husband and co-founder who decided to quit his Fortune 500 position to come onboard, we decided to develop one place where people could go to find, follow, & read blogs. Canopi.me, is an online community of bloggers and readers across a variety of interests and categories. Readers can find new bloggers and follow their favorites, all in one place. Bloggers can get a jump start, hone their craft, and gain recognition. Sound like the best of both worlds? It is!

When I’ve been slacking on recent posts via Reality Chic you can at least know it’s all been in good faith to bring you something better than I’d ever be able to create alone. And now I can finally invite all of you into what’s been keeping me mum for the past year along with encouraging you to Sign Up on Canopi.me’s beta site. While we’re officially live, we’re still in the middle of fixing and adding things to our site. Feel free to send us any feedback you may have. Can’t wait to see you under the Canopi…

4 Quick & Easy Halloween Costumes!

Somewhere between 7th grade and college, dressing up for Halloween became cool again. Unfortunately, princesses turned into erotic maids from Party City and Power Rangers turned into some kind of inside joke that likely stood for some sort of innuendo. Once you move on from the dorms it becomes a little less about the sexy cat and more about costume ideas with humor and/or pop culture relevancy behind them. However, let us not forget when you’re in your mid 20s dressing up on a budget is really what hails you a Halloween success. The challenge:  a decent costume on a budget. Outside of the tutu, it’s likely each of the outfits below could possibly be pulled together with things you might already own or at least could buy under $25.

The hipster is a go to pop culture icon. Just carry around your iPhone with ear buds and throw some peace signs while instagramming it.Duh!  If you’ve seen Ellen it’s likely you’ve heard of Sophia Grace & Rosie. All you need is a microphone and a hype girl. Don’t be surprised when your expected to rap some Nicki Minaj later in the night. If you’re in a last-minute bind, attempt the Rosie the Riveter look. Pop your collar with a blue button up, add a bandana, and don’t forget to flex. Last but not least is the ever so classic Where’s Waldo. This is always fun when there is more than just one of you!

What to Wear as a Teacher! 7 Teacher Looks on a Teacher’s Salary… (Part II)

School has officially started and I can’t help but notice that one of my old posts What to Wear as a Teacher! Teacher Looks on a Teacher’s Salary! has suddenly taken off. Much has changed since I wrote that post back in 2010, and I thought it was perfect timing to do a little update for all my devoted teachers out there. So here’s a postlude to the What to Wear as a Teacher Series (Part II).

Outfit #1

Don’t be afraid of wearing patterned pants to teach. They are trendy, yes, but they are also professional. The cut to this pant is actually quite flattering on most figures.

Target Shoes ; Forever 21 Necklace ; H&M Pants ; Kohls Blouse

Outfit #2

Each one of these pieces can be worn separately. I would highly recommend buying an outfit where you can get a lot of mileage out of it just like this.

Madewell Shirt ; Kohls Pants ; GAP Cardigan ; Target Wedges ; Target Belt

Outfit #3

Remember the first time when you saw your teacher outside of the classroom and realized they actually have a life and a first name beyond Mrs. or Mr. Yea, well this would be one of those times where you, as a teacher, could where this look in classroom and out of it, only to shock your students later while eating an Oriental Chicken Salad at Applebees with a friend who called you by (enter first name here).

Kohls Earrings ; Dr. Scholls Shoes  ; Target Peplum

Outfit #4

I am in love with this look. Throw on some tights or leggings and you can rock this into winter. Take off the scarf and add a pair of flats and you can still wear it into spring.

Kohls Boots ; Old Navy Sweater Dress ; Scarves.net Scarf ;  Forever 21 Bracelet

Outfit #5

The days of the A+ vest and denim jumpers are gone…long gone. This is an updated way to say, “Hey, I’m your teacher. Oh, and now I prefer an Apple iPad to the fruit.” Doubtful… but you can always hope.

TOMS Shoes ; GAP Dress ; Scarves.net Scarf

Outfit #6

Casual Friday’s are tricky. Just because you’re allowed to wear jeans doesn’t mean you should look like a bum. Trust me, you will lose the respect of your students. Instead, try these skinny cords that can take you to from the respectable teacher in the classroom to the cool chaperone at the football game and to the 20 something girl who has a life after 9pm on a Friday.

Forever 21 Blouse ; DSW Shoes ; Madewell Pants ;  Scarves.net Scarf ; GAP Shoes

Outfit #7

I die for this look. It’s so chic and there is absolutely no reason not to pull it off why teaching a group of students. You might just get a few more kids listening to what you have to say when your outfit is this cute.

Kohl’s Dress ; Kohl’s Tights ; H&M Cardigan ;  H&M Necklace ; H&M Bracelet ; DSW Boots

The Best Hair Stylist In Cincinnati (Also My Brand New Super Blonde Look)

Anyone who knows me, knows that I have a full blown slight obsession with changing my hair color. If they don’t know me, they soon figure it out after a couple of months. I think it started when my mom finally allowed me to highlight my hair back in 8th grade, and I’m pretty positive it won’t end until I’m laying in my coffin at which point I’m stating right here and now on my blog that when death is knocking at my door someone better make sure my hair looks good! With that morbid statement, it’s not really a surprise I have this little habit especially after watching my great grandma, who oddly enough had a pretty brown head of hair even at 90 years old. I like to think hair dye is a little gift from God as you might have guessed from the photos above.

One of the questions I’m asked all the time is if I know what my real hair color looks like. Not sure if it was the love struck version of myself or the fact that I’ve seen too many bad 80’s wedding photos, but I wanted my hair to be natural and not trendy on my wedding day. So I made the conscious decision to get back to my roots (literally). Now I have photo proof of what my real hair color actually looks like. Note to readers: that didn’t last too long after the wedding…

Moving on… living in multiple states involves the annoyance of having to find new hair stylists. As any girl knows it’s a nerve-wracking process to try someone new, and it’s my ultimate pet peeve when you go into a hair salon showing them inspiration and walk out like some sort of version they already had on their mind. Believe me, I’ve experienced my fair share of these. Another pet peeve is when you go into a stylist to have your hair trimmed but instead come out with 6 inches chopped off. You don’t have listen to me about everything. I get that, but I can guarantee you can trust me when it comes to a fashion outfit and a recommendation about hair. This I’ve got!

Luckily, I have found THE BEST hair stylist in Cincinnati. Sure she’s not the cheapest (around $80 for a trim/highlight/and style), but she’s also not the most expensive and actively lets you know what you can get for a better deal. For example, she recommended I do the less expensive partial highlight because it’s not worth the price of the full highlights when you can get all the color coverage you need with a partial. Awesome, right?  She is by far the best hair stylist I’ve had yet. Yesterday, I took in the inspiration above and came out with the look below. I couldn’t be happier so I decided to give credit where credit is due. No, I’m not getting paid and no I haven’t received a free hair cut to write this. I’m just a client who happens to be a blogger, who happens to want my readers in on the best kept hair secret in Cincinnati:

Hair Stylist Jessica KeyesTanyas Image & Wellness Salon – Hyde Park Cincinnati

No harsh bleaching, this was done with only a partial highlight!

I Can’t Live Without My… (10 Of My All-Time Favorite Fashion Items)

Don’t be fooled by my constant change in hair color. Ironically, I’m slightly a creature of habit. Once I find something I like I can’t seem to let it go. To put this in perspective, I’ve been ordering the same chicken nachos at local Mexican restaurants since I or my friends can remember. I’ve been watching Good Morning America with Diane Sawyer and without, since I was in high school. I’ve worn the same Target Heels to Fashion Week 3 years in a row. And, I continue to eat with my left hand because I was told in 2nd grade it would make me a better basketball player. I suppose habits die hard.

When it comes to fashion I often get asked what I would recommend. It just so happens that I have 10 style items that have become quite the habit in my wardrobe. Since I can’t live without them, I’d advise that you don’t either. P.S. Try the chicken nachos they really are… that good.

1.  Madewell Skinny Skinny Jeans

The best jeans ever!! They’re the perfect length for tall girls and are insanely soft. I live in these, no joke.

2.  Old Navy Vintage T-shirts

I discovered this item 3 months ago and have since bought one in every color. The best $5 I’ve ever spent.

3.  J.Crew Perfect Fit Tanks

You can find these at the J.Crew Factory Outlet for $8 – $10, and if you use an old college I.D. (you didn’t hear that from me) you can get an extra 15% off. They’re the best tees for layering.

4.  Lauren Conrad Ivory Blouse

So I don’t have this exact one below, but I bought one of her blouses from Kohls about two years ago and it was by far one of my favorite purchases. I can pair it with anything and it’s held up extremely well.

5.  TOMS Shoes

If you’ve followed this blog at all you know my affinity towards TOMS. My shoe collection has slowly started to grow because of this brand.

6.  MIA Boots

The best Christmas gift I’ve gotten thus far. Okay, so maybe that’s a bit extreme. I am in love with these boots… enough said.

7.  H&M Blazers

I go back and forth from H&M, Kohls, Target, & Forever 21 for my blazers. Another item I pretty much own in every color.

8.  Madewell Denim Vest

I own this in an ivory color and oddly enough have gotten the most leverage out of a denim vest oppose to any other layering pieces.

9.  Hairbands

Because I like to pretend I’m a hipster…

10.  Revlon Lipstick – Siren

I recently discovered this and am now pretty determined that I couldn’t live without it. It’s “THE” perfect shade for fall.

Get Your Complete Fall Wardrobe Under $35 at Target!

I truly believe that Target holds a special place in most of our hearts, or wallets, but mainly our hearts. Since most of us 20 & 30 somethings have a budget we’re still balancing it’s the perfect place to add fall items into your closet while still leaving room for toilet paper and trash bags.

The thing you normally have to watch for at stores like Target is the quality of the items. So I took the time to make a trip down to Target this past weekend and verify these items in person while standing strong and walking away with only one. Did I hear some sort of applause? Listen, walking away with only one item was a big deal. Though I have to admit, items have certainly been added to my birthday list as well. Yes, I still make birthday lists.

Below are your fall essentials verified by Reality Chic and all under $35 at your local Target.

Red Blazer $34.99

Everyone needs a blazer this fall and red just so happens to be the hot color of the season.

Anorak Jacket $34.99

So this item made did make it into my car. It’s the perfect go to fall jacket and mine just so happens to be in purple.

Faux Leather Blazer $28

I’ve already added this one to my b-day list. Very chic in person.

Blouse $18

It’s a great addition to your work attire or will make for an easy to wear outfit paired with skinny jeans and wedges.

Blouse $29.99

A loose-fitted white blouse is standard for fall especially when you wear it with dark wash skinny jeans, a scarf, and tall brown boots.

Flannel Button-up $17.99

Who doesn’t need a flannel shirt in the fall?

Dressy T-shirts $7- $10

If comfy items are your go to, buy these tees in multiple colors and layer throughout the winter and fall.

Tie T-shirt $19.99

The alternative look to a simple blouse.

Mossimo® Women’s Denim Leggings – Assorted Washes $25

I’m not a huge fan of most jeans from Target, but when I tested these out they were extra stretchy and uber soft. They would be ideal for wearing under boots and with long oversized sweaters or blouses. Not to mention, they were definitely copied to look like J.Brand jeans. Unless you’re a pro fashionista it’s likely you couldn’t tell the difference.

Mossimo Supply Co. Juniors Denim Jegging – Assorted Colors $22.99

Same comfort level but with assorted colored washes!

Peplum Dress $25

Peplum is a huge trend this year, and this dress was just as adorable and flattering in person!

Belts $12.99

Skinny belts are now a must. If you don’t have them, it’s time to incorporate them into your wardrobe.

Wedge Shoes $29.99

I’m slightly obsessed with the wedges below. Target has them for under $30 while Aldo has two looks for over $100. Take your pick!
